The tech giant Google is currently going through one of its most intense legal cases in the United States regarding potential anti competitive behavior in internet advertising and search. The DoJ has claimed that Google is engaged in anti-competitive behavior to make profits and is therefore demanding for structural remedies to be adopted to enhance equitable competition.
Google on its part is interested in demonstrating that it has worked very hard in order to become the dominant search engine in the industry and if it has achieved these results they are purely deserved. However, Google also claims that this has made all of them to become high efficient and useful in the search engines.
Apple inc. is involved in an important lawsuit against google. The company was called to testify because of the suspicion that the deal between Apple and Alphabet was not a mutually beneficial transaction, and Google may have acted in a proper manner. As a result of this we were at last able to learn how much Google paid to be the apple default search engine.
What kind of deal did Google and Apple strike?
Last year, Apple execs claimed that “Google had paid billions” in a pact to get the top search slot on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Some people have estimated that the amount paid by Google to Apple might have ranged between $18,000 and $20,000 per year, however, neither of this company has disclosed the exact amount invested. However, a Google witness suggested that the firm had to pass 36% of its money into search advertising.
Now the numbers are out – for the first time – through court documents filed Tuesday as part of Apple’s revenue-sharing fight with Google over the sweetheart Safari deal.
At first, Apple did not charge Google for making its search engine the default one in Safari browsers. This led to Google and Yahoo signing an agreement that allows the two companies to share in the revenue from search advertising. In May 2021 Google began to pay $ 1 billion per month for being the first in the search engine.
In 2022 Google paid Apple another $ 20 billion later. A multi-million dollar transaction that is mutually beneficial to the two companies.
Safari’s search engine is Google by default. Apple’s mobile users can change it anytime from Settings > Safari > Finder. Other alternatives include yahoo bing DuckDuckGo and Ecosia.
